When the time comes to shop for prom dresses, the most
important thing is to set aside sufficient time for the shopping trip.
Otherwise, you might find yourself in a less-than-perfect prom dress on
a very important occasion.
Proms have long been a traditional part of approaching graduation. As
young men and women get prepared to head out into the new world, they
take time out to search for perfect prom dresses and tuxedos.
Traditionally, prom dresses were frilly affairs, reminiscent of those
worn by brides’ maids.
A century ago, young men and women often met at formal dances and women
had need for several dresses similar in style to traditional prom
dresses. Because of the ongoing need for formal wear, the women usually
had a choice of dresses to wear. Popular materials for the formal
dresses of that day included satins and silks, with heavier velvets and
brocades for the winter months. Frills, including lace and ribbon, were
commonly used to further dress up the outfit. The young women who
attended dances of this caliber were also anxious to be different from
the other ladies at the dance, at least partly because they were not
usually accompanied by a young man and their goal was often to attract
the attention of some particular gentleman.
Prom dresses first mimicked those early styles. Most prom dresses had
hems that brushed the floor and yard-upon-yard of silks and satin, lace
and ribbon, were used to enhance the beauty of the young woman. Today,
prom dress styles have changed to meet the demands of young women.
There are sleeker looks with little or no adornment, and many women opt
for a shorter prom dress for this all-important evening.
Still, there is a demand for prom dresses made of yards and yards of
satin or silk, covered with yards of lace, hundreds of ribbon roses and
thousands of sequins pearls or shiny beads. After all, most young women
get only one chance to be a senior attending her senior prom.
