Prom Night Parties – Parents Get Involved

Prom night has traditionally been a night for students to let down their hair and celebrate the approaching graduation. Often, the junior class plans the prom as a send-off for their upper classmates and the junior class students are invited to participate in the prom festivities. The event usually includes a formal dance in which students are dressed to the hilt – the result of weeks or even months of shopping and planning. And prom night often culminates in a series of parties, sometimes including alcohol and sometimes ending with disaster.

Few parents send their children off to prom without concern about their safe return. Statistically, more young men and women do attend prom and after-prom parties safely than those who have accidents. But also statistically, the young people who are “letting their hair down” and celebrating their passage into adulthood are more likely to be in a situation that ends in disaster than at any other time of their young lives.

In some places, parents are taking a proactive stance with regard to the prom. Though parents realize this rite of passage, they are also aware of the potential danger. Instead of hoping that children find safe activities for prom night, parents are creating some activities. For example, groups of parents sometimes find a local building that can be rented or borrowed for the entire night and organize an after-prom party. Municipal buildings, community rooms and even colleges sometimes have space that can be used free of charge. Especially with a building that already has several rooms and quite a lot of space, the building can be an attractive alternative for prom attendees. Dimmed lights, couches and chairs arranged for comfortable talks, tons of body pillows for relaxing in front of a television set with a variety of movies and plenty of music are among the options offered at some of these events. Adult supervision is at a minimum, but ensures that student abide by the no-alcohol rule. Finishing off prom night safely, while still having fun, was certainly worth the effort for parents. Having a fun and safe place to gather was certainly a great memory for students.
